The Gitanjali Summer Dance Retreat, in the Hudson valley, is a space for dancers to experience Bharatanatyam in a way that is expansive, imaginative, rigorous, connected to nature, community, and history. We aim to go beyond the confines of the hourly class model which limits the dancer’s ability to imbibe and embody this art form. Instead, dancers - and their loved ones - experience being in a spacious art-making community. The days include dance practice, kolam, theater, music, yoga, delicious food, games, nature walks, service/seva, and fireside chats.

RETREAT DATES

The third annual Gitanjali retreat will take place July 25–August 2, 2025 at Shanti Mandir in Walden, NY. Come for the whole week, or choose a shorter experience. July 25-27 Family Weekend Retreat

July 25-29 Community Dance Experience

July 30-August 2 Individual Immersion

Retreat participants receive 4-5 hours of tailored instruction per day in yoga, Bharatanatyam, dance theory, and other art forms from Malini and guest artists. Each day begins with yoga asana to gently prepare the body for more intense movement. Dance classes build from slow foundational movements to rigorous adavu and choreography practice. The remainder of the day is spent in exploring other art forms to make the cross-disciplinary connections that are so important to developing as a dancer and artist. During the Individual Immersion retreat, participants will receive private dance instruction in repertoire, to be determined in conversation with Malini. Meals, chai breaks, and evenings are times to relax and connect with community members.

I loved the community, being able to have time to rest and recharge, being able to dance daily, and the social time was really lovely. Getting to start the day with Malini as a yoga teacher was an amazing gift and one of my favorite things.

Music! Art! Food! Campfire! Malika was so great with the kids. And I really appreciated how Vidya channeled the kids’ playful energy into an amazing dance piece. I felt honored to be a part of the retreat and was touched by how welcoming everyone was.
